Glee: The Music: Vol. 1

Album Review: Glee The Music Volume 1

Album Review: Glee The Music Volume 1

It's not often that a soundtrack to a TV series is en route to becoming the nation's number one album - just imagine a compilation of all the songs from Ian's café and the Queen Vic. But new American comedy GLEE and its 'Glee: The Music' release seems to have created just as many 'gleeks' here in the UK as it has in it's home country.

The show centres on a 'show choir' of misfit students, who all have impeccable singing capabilities - something that has brought them all together. As cheesy as it sounds, the comedy is sharp and the cast very talented, so this compilation will be a hit with all those enamoured with the show and also with those who enjoy good cover-songs.

The choice of songs is what makes 'Glee: The Music' so unique. The youthful cast belt out ballads alongside hip hop, covering everything from Rihanna 'Take a Bow' and Kanye West 'Gold Digger' to Journey 'Don't Stop Believing' and Queen 'Somebody to Love'. Tracks to listen out for include solos from the two strongest vocalists in the show, Lea Michele singing 'Defying Gravity', from the hit play Wicked - one of only a few covers of show tunes, and Amber Riley going to town on Jill Scott's 'Hate on Me'.

The only gripe with this collection is that, although it includes some fantastic performances and a wide range of songs, many fan-favourites are left out. There's no sign of the hilarious mash-ups, no Salt n' Pepa 'Push It' and, most importantly, no sign of the Acafellas; the all male vocal group led my teacher Will Schuester, who provide two of the most memorable performances on the show: Bell Biv Devoes 'Poison' or Colour Me Badd's 'I Wanna Sex You Up'. A little disappointing, as there's just something about middle-aged white men singing New Jack Swing...

Overall the phenomenal success of GLEE is sure to continue, considering how well its doing on a less-than-prime scheduling slot. This album will do enough to keep the fans appetite whet until the new episodes begin in April.
